Strep Throat

Strep Throat In Lake Charles, LA

Having a sore throat is a common problem among children, and a sore throat may go away on its own. If your child has a sore throat that is getting worse, your child may have a bacterial infection known as strep throat.

The Cause of Strep Throat

Strep throat is caused by an infection from Streptococcus bacteria. Strep throat will not go away by itself, and it is also highly contagious, so your child needs to be seen by a pediatrician as soon as possible.

Signs and Symptoms of Strep Throat

Your child may have strep throat if your child experiences:

  • A sudden, severe sore throat
  • Difficult and painful swallowing
  • A fever over 101 degrees
  • Swelling around the tonsils and lymph nodes
  • White or yellow areas on the back of the throat

Diagnosis of Strep Throat

Strep throat is diagnosed with a lab test to determine the presence of Streptococcus bacteria.

Treatment of Strep Throat

If your child has strep throat, your pediatrician will:

  • Prescribe antibiotic medication to kill Streptococcus bacteria
  • Recommend over-the-counter pain medication like Tylenol to reduce pain and fever

What You Can Do to Help Your Child Feel Better

Make sure your child rests and avoids any strenuous activity. Give your child plenty of fluids to keep your child hydrated. Keep your child on a soft, bland diet until your child’s throat heals.

What You Need to Do at Home

Keep your child home until your doctor advises otherwise, to prevent the spreading of Streptococcus bacteria to others. Also, remember to:

  • Avoid sharing utensils, cups, glasses, or plates
  • Wash linens thoroughly after your child is well
  • Throw away the toothbrush your child used when ill
  • Wash your hands thoroughly and often
